Max loves his crib, and is not a fan of change, so we knew it would not be an overnight change. We decided to set his new bed up while also leaving his crib in his room. This allowed him to get used to the big bed, play on it, but still be able to sleep in his crib if he chose to. Right away, he was fine with sleeping in his bed at naptime, but had no desire to sleep there at night. I think it was just the room being dark at night. We did not push the situation - hey, we like our sleep, too! - and we gave him about 2 weeks to continue to stay in his crib.
A week ago, when he was still showing no interest in the bed at night, we decided we needed to go ahead and take the crib out completely. Max got to help Jeff disassemble and move the crib out, which he thought was pretty cool. We were very nervous about his reaction once he realized it was truly gone, though. Naptime was great - 3 hours of good sleep. Nighttime was harder - he was very upset the first night and kep asking for "Other one bed.". Jeff and I were so sad about the whole situation, but we knew that if we put the crib back, we would have to go through it all again eventually. It took about 2 hours, but Max did fall asleep that first night and stayed asleep the entire night. I was very proud of him! Every night since then has gotten so much better. He is now falling alseep very quickly without any mention of his crib. I ask him every time, "What is the one rule?", to which he replies, "No get up." So far, he has not gotten up once, which is amazing! We do keep a gate on his room at night, though, just in case. He is a 2 year old boy, after all!
I think his room looks so cute with the twin bed. The bed is actually mine from when I was a kid, and I think it is so neat that Max is using it now. (Thanks to my Mom and Dad for storing it for so long!) For his 2nd birthday, we got him the surf bedding from Pottery Barn that is almost the same as the crib bedding he had. I really did not want to change his Surfer room, so I love that this bedding goes with everything he already had.
Do I love that my sweet boy is old enough for a twin bed? NO! But I am so proud of him for handling this change so well, and I am so grateful to God that this little guy is sleeping peacefully down the hall from me every night. He is such a joy!
