Maui Day 1 - Pool and Sunset

Our first day in Maui was low-key as we tried to rest from our long trip over. We hung out at the pool, which Max absolutely loved! He is a water-bug, for sure. (One thing he did not love was the beach and ocean, as you can tell from the screaming picture below! He was not excited about the texture of the sand or the loud sound of the ocean. He did get a little better about the sand later in the trip, but it was still never one of his favorite things. ) Anyway, after hanging out at the pool and after Max took a long nap, we loaded up and headed to the top of the volcano, Haleakala, to see the gorgeous sunset. It is 10,000 feet up, so it took us about 2 hours to get to the top. It was very hazy, since the tradewinds were not blowing, so we weren't sure how much we would be able to see. As you can tell from the pictures, we were surrounded by clouds and fog! It was also freezing up there, with a temp around 40 degrees. It was so amazing, because just as it was time for the sun to set, God parted the clouds just enough for us to take in the awesome beauty of a Hawaiian sunset. The most beautiful shades of red and orange lit up the sky and reflected off the clouds - gorgeous! The pictures cannot do it justice - you will just have to go for yourself one day to see it!! It was a wonderful day!
